6 Ways to Introduce Fun to Learning

Fun and learning go hand in hand. Integrating fun into learning is a proven pedagogical approach that stimulates many child development and learning aspects. Fun is a powerful intrinsic motivator that helps young children explore and learn naturally. Plus, teachers also find more pleasure in a playful pedagogical context. Thus, experts see learning through fun as a win-win approach that every daycare can incorporate through its curriculum and everyday classroom activities.

The idea should be to employ playful supports to stimulate and maintain children's curiosity and enables them to learn with pleasure without compromising academic or intellectual rigor.

Here are some ways to do it:

1. Adapt to Children's Needs

You might have incorporated game-based learning into your daycare curriculums, but remember that your idea of fun may differ from that of children. Therefore, the best is to start by reconsidering our role as daycare providers and teachers and adapting our teaching method to children's learning. Instead of focusing on performance, concentrate on providing them with tools and sources of fulfillment adapted to their learning needs.

We can do this by analyzing their learning style, likes, and interests and making our teaching methods consistent.

2. Observe the Child's Needs

Children, especially preschoolers, need attention individually and a more personalized teaching approach. You must observe them by paying attention to their interests and following them to adapt to their needs. This observation is a quality in its own right.

Identify and respond to their forms of communication, discover what activities drive them, and what they like to do. This way, you can target their interests by offering them adapted activities.

3. Keep Introducing New Concepts

Your daycare curriculum must be flexible and versatile. It shouldn't stand in the face of children's imagination and spontaneity. Comfort zones are good, but there should be variety and new things to make children think out of the box and stimulate their excitement.

You can select toddler curriculums, preschool curriculums, and other curriculums from various relevant resources available.

4. Integrate Play

Play not just makes learning fun but also easy and deep-rooted. For preschoolers, it is the primary learning means teachers can incorporate by participating and enhancing the role play.

Introduce simple yet challenging tasks, such as opening a jar, taking out what's inside, carrying a tray with items on it from one place to another, putting together a puzzle, finding a hidden object, etc. With time, vary the games by introducing more challenging tasks. Too simple and repeated games can be boring, and the children will lose interest.

Remember that playful learning doesn't mean gaming using technology tools. Play begins with anticipation arising new ideas and excitement. Introduce different games into your daily classroom activities, such as playing with dough, engaging in arts and crafts, integrating outdoor activities, etc.

5. Always Be Present

Help the children develop confidence by encouraging them to do what they're doing and offering them your reassuring presence. Your presence, focusing on them individually, enables them to evolve daily, encourages them to strive, be a performer in their own development and learn confidently.

At the same time, maintain a reasonable distance. Being present doesn't mean interrupting the child or doing things for them to make it easier for them. It can be counterproductive. Allow them to experiment freely without criticizing them. This way, you let them use their imagination fully and freely and develop a trust factor that lets the child move forward independently at their own pace.

6. Give Them a Free Choice of Activity

Following a curriculum is important; therefore, defining the educational material should be your priority. However, giving them free choice of activity is also essential to discover and explore things on their own. Leave the material available to the children and let them move forward at their own pace. A child may want to repeat the same activity again and again while others do not. So let them repeat the experience as much as they wish.
